Student Climate Change Institute

The Howard County Conservancy, HCPSS, and the Howard County Office of Community Sustainability welcome 10th-grade students to apply for their free Student Climate Change Institute. Participating students will hear lectures from climate experts on topics exploring how climate change can impact public health, how environmental policy is made, and more. Participants will also work with experts and fellow students to consider solutions to global climate issues, and grow as ambassadors to form initiatives in schools and communities against climate change. Students will participate in eight weekly sessions during the fall and will meet monthly during the spring to implement action projects.

Sessions will take place on the following Tuesdays from 6-7 p.m. and will be held online except where indicated:

  • October 19 – in-person session at the Howard County Conservancy (5-7 p.m.)
  • October 26
  • November 2
  • November 9
  • November 16
  • November 30
  • December 7
  • December 14 – in-person session at the Howard County Conservancy

Three sophomore students per high school will be chosen to participate and must commit to attending all sessions. Students must complete and submit all portions of the application for their school by 4 p.m. Tuesday, September 28, 2021:

The institute is presented in collaboration with Howard County Office of Community Sustainability, Maryland League of Conservation Voters, Maryland Department of Natural Resources, and the University of Maryland Extension.
