The financial aid officers hope that coming onsite to Glenelg High School will be helpful for students and families to encourage early completion
of the FAFSA and maximize the opportunity for students to apply early enough for financial aid to be considered not only for federal aid but, for state and institutional aid as well.
Please note, this workshop is not just for those planning to attend Howard Community College. It is for all students preparing to enroll for any college during the 2018-2019 academic year.

AFCEA is a worldwide association for communications, electronics, information systems, and intelligence professionals. Since 1987, the local Central Maryland Chapter has awarded scholarships to deserving high school seniors, promoting higher education in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) areas of study that can lead to careers in national defense. We look for students interested in engineering, math, computers, cyber, or IT – any major that addresses electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, information technology, cyber, mathematics, physics, aerospace engineering, and mechanical engineering – and can apply their studies directly to the Intelligence Community. Students who pursue a degree in other science like pre-med, pre-law, biology, environmental, or other forms of engineering not listed above are unlikely to receive this scholarship. In May, 2018, AFCEA Central Maryland presented 17 scholarships to deserving students and we plan to do that again this year. Applications are available at https://centralmd.afceachapters.org/merit-scholarship-application for the merit scholarships. Applications for the Freedom Scholarship Award Application are available at https://centralmd.afceachapters.org/freedom-scholarship-application
AFCEA Central Maryland is offering a Freedom Scholarship and a Merit Scholarship: Freedom Scholarship – this scholarship is awarded to those students who have overcome an adversity or hardship in their personal or family life, and because of this adversity or hardship, may not have been able to perform up to their full potential in high school. The Freedom Scholarship will aid them in accomplishing their goals in higher education. Students must be nominated by a school counselor to be eligible for this scholarship. These students may not receive academic scholarships due to lower grades and, in your professional judgment, have the ability to succeed in college and the professional workplace. Merit Scholarship – this scholarship is awarded to those students who excel academically. There are several merit scholarships available, each is named for someone who has had a major impact on the AFCEA Central Maryland Chapter. Students apply for a merit scholarship (not for any one in particular) and the AFCEA Scholarship Committee determines which merit scholarship they are eligible to receive. Please note that if an eligible student is interested in pursuing the Merit Cyber Studies scholarship, then their essay must address cyber.

It is awarded to high school seniors planning to enter a science or engineering field of study supportive of national defense (i.e., engineering, telecommunications, computer science, mathematics). The scholarship may be applied to any higher-level institution across the nation that is not a military academy.

The scholarship may be applied to any higher-level institution across the nation that is not a military academy.
Freedom and Merit scholarships are $10,000 each, awarded in equal increments of $2,500 in each year of a four-year college education. These scholarships may be used for collegiate study at any accredited higher level institution in the nation. Recipients for either the Freedom or Merit scholarships are expected to pursue an academic course of college study in scientific or engineering fields (STEM) that could lead to a work career supporting national defense objectives.
Students will be notified in Late February/early March, 2019, if they have been selected and will invite their parents to an awards banquet in early May 2019 to receive their scholarship. We will also notify their high school about successful recipients.

The students must provide information about themselves, their parents, their high school, and their plans for college.
