The next SAT test date is March 9, 2019.  Glenelg High School is a test site for this date.  The regular registration deadline is February 8, 2019.  Sign up by this date to avoid a late fee.   Register on-line at sat.org/register

Summer Opportunity
Terp Young Scholars
College-bound students are invited to apply to Terp Young Scholars at the University of Maryland.
Acceptance to this 3-week summer collegiate program is competitive, and based upon academic performance. Students will experience rigorous college courses, earn three college credits, and appreciate the rich diversity of campus life at UMD.  Terp Young Scholars is an opportunity for students to preview UMD through a dynamic and challenging college experience.  Learn more at ysp@umd.edu

Below are some new scholarship opportunities.

                                                                                             February 2019 General and Local Scholarship Updates  

PTA Council of Howard County is proud to offer scholarships to Howard County School seniors for the 2019-2020 school year.

The principal aim of this scholarship program is to offer financial support to Howard County high school senior students and to encourage serious and deserving students to continue their studies in a junior/community college, four-year college/university, or a technical trade school after high school graduation.  This is a one-year,
non-renewable grant.

There are four different scholarships offered and they can be viewed on our website: 
Academic Scholarship - $1,000
Teacher Education Scholarship - $1,000
Dr. Charles Ecker Scholarship for Community Service - $500
M. Thomas Goedeke Scholarship for trade, Technical Education, or Community College - $500

Scholarship awards may be applied toward tuition, fees, books or other costs directly related to educational needs.

The application process is now open and may be obtained via the attached documents or via our website at www.ptachc.org.   Applications are due by April 6, 2019.

Federal Water Quality Association (FWQA)   Environmental Scholarship
Three scholarships in the amount of $2,000 each will be awarded in 2019.  The FWQA is seeking young women and men preparing for careers in environmental protection.  Those eligible to apply for the scholarships are graduating high school seniors who plan to pursue an environmental career and who have immediate plans to attend a four-year undergraduate program leading to a bachelor’s degree in the environmental sciences, environmental engineering, civil engineering, biology, chemistry, chemical engineering, or natural resource planning.  Other areas of the environment will also be considered.  An essay is required.  Application deadline: Monday, April  8, 2019.    

The Howard County Foundation For Black Educational and Cultural Achievementi nvites African-American students who will be graduating in the Spring of 2019 to apply for their scholarship.  The principal requirements are residency in Howard County, a GPA of 2.5 or better, two recommendations, and a 250-300 word essay.  The applicant has multiple topics to choose from for the essay. Other requirements are listed on the application.  The application and criteria are available for download at the website http://hcfbeca.org   The application deadline is March 15, 2019.

The Recovery Village Health Care Scholarship
The Recovery Village is dedicated to maintaining exceptional service at our alcohol and drug rehab facilities while providing unique opportunities for education and personal development. As part of this commitment, The Recovery Village is offering a $1,000 scholarship to students pursuing a medical-related course of study.
To enter to win a $1,000 scholarship, simply submit a short essay (no more than 500 words) describing why you are passionate about substance use disorder and mental health treatment. Essays can be in the form of a personal narrative with a medical perspective or focus specifically on clinical experience.
Do you have a compelling recovery story? Have you witnessed the challenges that addiction can present, or helped someone overcome substance use disorder? Share your experience and describe why you are eager to enter the health care field for a chance to be awarded a $1,000 scholarship.

A $1,000 award will be given to a student pursuing a health-related degree program. Areas of study that will be considered include, but are not limited to, counseling, social work, emergency medicine, pre-med, nursing, psychology (with a focus on addiction counseling or a substance-abuse related field).
Applicants must submit an essay no more than 500 words describing why they are passionate about health care, with a focus on substance abuse and mental health. Essays can draw from personal or professional experience.

State of Maryland International Reading Association Council offers the Joseph Fox, Jr. Memorial Scholarship.  This scholarship offers three $2,000 to Maryland high school recipients who plan to major in reading or a reading-related field and pursue coursework that will prepare him/her for a teaching career.  Students interested in applying should go to https://www.somla.online/scholarship-opportunities.html.  Application Deadline is April 15, 2019.

 

2019 Conexiones Annual Awards Application Instructions and Guidelines
 
Conexiones hosts their Annual Awards Convocation to recognize Hispanic/Latino graduates from the Howard             County Public School System (HCPSS).
 
Who is Eligible? Hispanic/Latino seniors in Howard County Public High Schools who will be graduating in May 2019 with a minimum cumulative weighted GPA of 3.5
 
For the purpose of this application, “Hispanic/Latino” is defined as a student who was, or whose                parent/grandparent was, born in one of the following countries: ​Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia,              Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua,            Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, Spain, Uruguay, and Venezuela.
 
Requirements: 1. Completed application with essay (online only) 2. Copy of a senior year 1st quarter or 2nd quarter report card

The amounts of the awards are as follow:
● Conexiones Recognition Award -  $150
● Conexiones Excellence Award (1) -  $500
● Feli Solá-Carter Leadership Award (1) -  $750   
Note: While the financial value of the awards is helpful, Conexiones believes that their true value is the opportunity the Annual Awards Convocation offers to recognize the hard work and achievement of our               Hispanic/Latino Seniors before their families, and the county’s and school system’s leadership.
 
The Conexiones Recognition Award will be given to any student selected for recognition.
The Conexiones Excellence Award will be given to one  ​student whose application shows overall accomplishments above his/her peers.
The Feli Solá-Carter Leadership Award will be given to one student who reflects exceptional achievements in leadership roles and activities, community service, and academic excellence.
 
The Conexiones Awards Ceremony will be an evening event held in late April 2019. Students who are  selected to be recognized are highly encouraged to attend. The Maggie J. Brown Spirit of Columbia Scholarship Award  is given each year to graduating high school seniors who have shown extraordinary dedication to performing community service in the Columbia area.  Up to six $ 2,500 education scholarships will be awarded  to graduating high school seniors who attend Howard County public or private schools, live in Columbia or have a parent that works full time in Columbia, and have maintained at least a “C” average.  The application form can be completed and submitted online at www.columbiaassociation.org/scholarship  Applications are due March 15, 2019.

 

The Engineering Society of Baltimore is offering scholarship loans and grants to graduating high school students that will be pursuing a degree in engineering in an ABET approved program..
This year, five loans at 4% interest for $4,000 each and three one-time grants are being offered.  The loans are renewable each year providing the student is still enrolled in an ABET approved program.  Three one-time grants include a $3,000 Larry Lewis Scholarship, a $2,500 Engineering Society of Baltimore Scholarship and a $3,000 James A. Posey Associates Centennial Scholarship, the latter earmarked preferably for a student enrolled in a mechanical or electrical engineering program.  The loans and grants are unrestricted and can be used for any purpose the student desires.  The application for scholarship loans and grants must be completed online at www.esb.org  The deadline for application is Sunday, March 31, 2019
