I am 2d Lt Brooke Balding and I am an admissions advisor for Air Force ROTC. I am sending an invite for an Air Force Information Session on Saturday, April 4th from 9:30am-12pm. The location is the Reckord Armory, 4490 Rossborough Lane, College Park, MD 20742.

At this session, there will be presentations on Air Force ROTC, the Air Force Academy, enlisting in the Reserves versus Active Duty, and the Air National Guard! This will be a great opportunity for students who are curious about the military. They will hear about the different pathways into the Air Force and also be able to ask questions.

New Scholarship Opportunities

The Glenwood Lions Club is offering educational scholarships to graduating students enrolled at Glenelg High School.  Two $2,000 scholarships will be awarded to Glenelg High School Seniors graduating in 2020.  The scholarships are dedicated for the use of tuition, registration fees, housing and other expenses related to enrollment for the freshmen year at an accredited college, university, technical school, or other approved post secondary institution.  Criteria: U.S. Citizen, Demonstration of Academic Performance, Demonstration of Community Service, Demonstration of Financial Need, and Demonstration of Participation in School/Community Activities. Applications are available in Student Services.  Completed applications must be returned to Mrs. Miles in Student Services no later than March 31, 2020.   Two winners will be chosen by the Glenwood Lions Club Education Services Committee without regard to race, color, national origin, religion, age, disability, gender, marital status, sexual orientation or family status.

 

The Howard County Striders' David Tripp Scholar/Athlete

Applications forms are now being accepted for the Howard County Striders’ David Tripp Scholar/Athlete Awards.  In the past three years, the striders have awarded an average of $6,000 in “Tripp” grants.

The criteria include excellence and achievement in the classroom and as a runner in cross country, track and/or road races.   The intention is to recognize both male and female winners as well as runners-up, provided there are deserving candidates. Only Howard County residents, who are graduating seniors from a high school in Howard County are eligible. These awards are based on four years of achievements, and are not based on need. 

There are no restrictions on the number of winners that can come from any one school.  Applications and Suggestions and Guidelines are available at www.striders.net  Application deadline is Friday, April 3, 2020.

PTA Council of Howard County is proud to offer scholarships to Howard County School Seniors for the 2019-2020 school year.

The principle aim of this scholarship program is to offer financial support to Howard County high school senior students and to encourage serious and deserving students to continue their studies in a junior/community college, four year college/university, or a technical trade school after high school graduation. This a one-year non-renewable grant. 

There are four different scholarships offered and they can be viewed on our website:

Academic Scholarship - $1,000

Teacher Education Scholarship  - $1,000

Dr. Charles Ecker Scholarship for Community Service - $500

M. Thomas Goedeke Scholarship for trade, technical education or Community College - $500

Scholarship awards may be applied toward tuition, fees, books or other costs directly related to educational needs.  The application process is now open and may be obtained in Student Services or at www.ptachc.org.  Applications are due by Tuesday, April 14, 2020. 

The following is a list of scholarships that are available to Howard County students through the Community Foundation of Howard County.

We are accepting applications for students in the 2020-21 scholarship cycle through March 19, 2020.

Eligibility criteria may be based on where a student went to high school, what a student’s planned major field of study will be or a variety of other factors. While some scholarships are awarded based on the selection of particular guidance departments, others are awarded based on a competitive application process.

 

The scholarship deadline for the 2020 Community Foundation of Howard County Scholarship Program is March 19, 2020, at 11:59 PM Pacific Time. Please be sure to sign up for our Scholarship eNewsletter for future information about our program.

How do I apply for a scholarship?

To start a new application, follow the instructions below:

Login to your existing ISTS Account or create a new account by clicking the “Don’t have an account? Register!” link. Be sure to use an email address that you check regularly; do not use a school email address as these expire after graduation
Once you have successfully logged in, you will be redirected to the Scholarship Eligibility Page. If you are directed to your ISTS Home Page instead of the application, click the Add New Application button, enter the program key CFHoCo, and click apply. 
Complete all required fields, upload your required documents, request all required supplements and click the “Submit” button to save your information. 
Return to your ISTS Home Page at https://aim.applyISTS.com to monitor your application status.  Your application status must update to Complete to be considered for the scholarship program.

Do I need to provide my high school with a copy of the HCPSS Student Transcript Request form after I’ve uploaded it to the application portal?

For the purposes of completing the application you only need to upload this form to the application system. However, if you need a copy of your transcript and/or report card you will need to submit the HCPSS Student Transcript Request form to your school.  As it relates to the scholarship application, you would only need one printed copy of the documents, which you’ll scan and upload to the system when asked to provide these materials.

Vision Financial Group Scholarship – Up to $20,000

For Glenelg High School seniors

This $20,000 scholarship ($5,000/year for four years), is available to a graduating student from Glenelg High School who demonstrates a commitment to community involvement and plans to attend a four-year college or university.

The Amanda Post “AmandaWins” Soccer Association of Columbia/Howard County Student-Athlete Scholarship – $5,000

For high school seniors attending a Howard County public or private school that have played on a SAC/HC travel or recreational team

This scholarship is offered in loving memory of Amanda Josephine Post, who passed away in 2009 during her freshman year at River Hill High School and in her ninth year as a Soccer Association of Columbia/Howard County player. Candidates must plan to attend an accredited two- or four-year college/university or trade school.

John C. Clegg Scholarship – Up to $6,000

For Columbia Clippers swim team participants

For high school seniors who participated on the Columbia Clippers swim team from 9th through 12th grade.

Jon Grove Memorial Scholarship – $2,500

For high school seniors who attend a Howard County public school

This $2,500 scholarship is available to a Howard County Public High School student, currently in their senior year, whose life has been impacted by cancer, either personally or within their immediate family.

Allan Homes Outstanding Student Volunteer Scholarship – Up to $1,500

For individuals who volunteered for the Special Olympics Howard County Swim Team

There is up to $1,500 available to individuals, enrolled in a Maryland high school or college undergraduate program, that demonstrate they volunteered their talent and provided exceptional service to the Special Olympics Howard County Swim Team.

Freeman K. Hill Teen Scholarship – $1,500

For high school seniors who attend a Howard County public or private school

This scholarship is for a Howard County student who demonstrates his or her religious faith through good citizenship, service to others and the community and academic achievement – values that were exemplified in the life of Freeman K. Hill, an engineer at the Applied Physics Lab. Applicants must plan to attend a two- or four-year college/university or trade school.

Robert J. Gaw Memorial Scholarship – $1,000

For high school seniors who attend a Howard County public school

This scholarship is offered in memory of Robert J. Gaw, co-founder of the Ryland Group, Inc. It provides toward the cost of tuition to a two- or four-year college/university or trade school for a Howard County public high school student.

Bob Kittleman Scholarship – Up to $1,000

For high school seniors attending a Howard County public or private school

This scholarship is offered, in honor of Bob Kittleman, for high school seniors who have shown potential in or are accomplished in engineering and the applied sciences. Applicants must plan to attend a two- or four-year college/university or trade school.

Doug Parker Scholarship – $2,500

This scholarship was established to honor and pay tribute to “Big Doug” Parker, a big man with a big heart. Applicants must plan to attend a two- or four-year college/university or trade school.

Phyllis Utterback Scholarship – $2,000

For high school seniors who attend a Howard County public school

This scholarship is offered in memory/honor of Phyllis Utterback in recognition of her remarkable commitment to education, youth and family. She epitomized the impact and value of education and the positive role it can play in the lives of young and old.

Schnorf Family Special Olympics Volunteer Scholarship – Up to $1,500

Wilbon H. and Mary J. Pulliam Scholarship – $1,000

For high school seniors attending a Howard County public or private school

This scholarship is offered in memory of Wilbon H. and Mary J. Pulliam for Howard County high school seniors planning to attend a two- or four-year college/university or trade school in Maryland.

C. Merritt Pumphrey Scholarship – $1,000

For high school seniors attending a Howard County Public school or Chapelgate

This scholarship is offered in memory of C. Merritt Pumphrey, who died at the age of 83 on December 7, 2007. Candidates must plan to attend a four-year college or university to pursue an education in pre-law, agriculture, animal husbandry,or a field related to farming. Mr. Pumphrey worked with his father and brother to create Dalton Farms, a dairy farm that is now Thunder Hill of Columbia.

Dorothy Iglehart Pumphrey Memorial Scholarship – $1,000

For high school seniors attending a Howard County Public school or Chapelgate

This scholarship is available to a student currently in their senior year at a Howard County Public School or Chapelgate, which plans to pursue a career in the fine arts or who has been involved in the fine arts in the school or community.

Karen and Howard Carolan Scholarship – $1,000

For high school seniors who have participated in the Howard County Youth Program

This scholarship is offered in loving memory of Howard T. Carolan, Jr., and Karen R. Carolan, longtime residents of Howard County. Applicants must have participated in the Howard County Youth Program and must plan to attend a two- or four-year college/university or trade school.

Matthew Cheswick Memorial Scholarship Award ($1,000)

Matthew Cheswick, a 2008 Glenelg Graduate, was an individual with an infectious smile and a good heart.  He is remembered for his many random acts of kindness and for the good citizen that he was.  This $1,000 scholarship has been established to remember him and his compassion for helping others.  It will be awarded to a student who also has the same characteristics.  An essay explaining your philosophy on the importance of helping others with examples, and how this scholarship would assist you in college/career goals is part of the application process.  Applications are available in Glenelg High Student Services.  Completed applications must be submitted to Ms. Brandt in Student Services by April 1, 2020.

 

Ryan Conley Memorial Scholarship

Ryan Conley, a junior at Glenelg High School in 2007, was tragically killed in a sledding accident.  He spent many hours volunteering and assisting those in need.  This $1,000 scholarship is intended to reward an “unsung hero” who works quietly and consistently behind the scenes for the betterment of his/her community.  Applications are available in Student Services.  Completed applications must be submitted to Ms. Brandt by April 1, 2020.

ITE Diversity Scholars Program

If you answered yes to these questions, check out the ITE Diversity Scholars Program, sponsored by the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE). ITE is an international membership association of transportation professionals who work to improve mobility and safety for all transportation users and help build smart and livable communities. The purpose of this program is to increase underrepresented populations participation in the transportation profession by supporting increased diversity at the undergraduate level. This program is open to any U.S. high school student of African-American; Native American, Alaskan, and Hawaiian; or Hispanic/Latino heritage with an interest in a career in transportation and seeking to study transportation engineering, planning, or in a related-field at a school with an established ITE Student Chapter.

The four cornerstones to this program are:

•Financial support (a total of up to $20,000 in scholarship support: up to $4000 annually per student for up to 5 years of undergraduate enrollment)

•ITE Student Chapter engagement

•Mentoring

•Internship Opportunities

Eligibility requirements include (but are not limited to) the following:

•United States high school student of African-American; Native American, Alaskan, and Hawaiian; or Hispanic/Latino heritage

 Federal Water Quality Association (FWQA)   Environmental Scholarship

  Three scholarships in the amount of $2,000 each will be awarded in 2020.  The FWQA is seeking young women and men preparing for careers in environmental protection.  Those eligible to apply for the scholarships are graduating high school seniors who plan to pursue an environmental career and who have immediate plans to attend a four-year undergraduate program leading to a bachelor’s degree in the environmental sciences, environmental engineering, civil engineering, biology, chemistry, chemical engineering, or natural resource planning.  Other areas of the environment will also be considered.  An essay is required.  Application deadline: Monday, April 6, 2020.   

 

The Maggie J. Brown Spirit of Columbia 2020 Scholarship Award

The Columbia Association scholarship program offers up to six $2,500 education awards to graduating high school seniors who exhibit exceptional efforts in providing community service to benefit Columbia residents and those in the Columbia area. 

Eligibility Criteria:

Be a June 2020 graduating senior from an accredited public, private or parochial high school
Reside on assessment-paying property or have a parent/guardian who works full-time on or owns CA-assessed property
Have a cumulative grade point average of C or better

The Howard County Professional Fire Fighters Association, IAFF Local 2000 is pleased to announce they will provide a $500 scholarship for a graduating senior from each of our Howard County public high schools.  This scholarship is geared to help the “average” student who displays exceptional qualities and effort rather than being an award for the highest grades or sports aptitude.  Any student who has attained a 2.5 grade average in their senior year and a minimum SAT score of 900 will be welcome to participate by submitting an application.  Applications are available in Student Services.  Entries must be postmarked no later than April 1, 2020.  Entries shall be submitted to:

The Kappa Phi Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., the oldest Black Greek letter college fraternity in the United States, offers several scholarships to high school seniors.  Awards are offered to African American high school seniors, and active Alpha Achievers members.  Criteria for each specific scholarship differs. The scholarships are: MLK Memorial Scholarship, Kappa Phi Lambda Young leaders Scholarship, Kappa Phi Lambda Community Service Award, and Kappa Phi Lambda Financial Aid Award.  Application form can be downloaded at www.apakpl.org. The Office of Senator Hester would like to extend the 2020 Senatorial Scholarship application to the seniors of your school who live in her district. With a deadline of April 5, 2020, the application will provide guidelines and information for considering individuals. National Naval Officers Association Washington, DC Chapter*** 2020Scholarship Awards Program

MAILED APPLICATION PACKAGES, INCLUDING OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS, MUST BE POSTMARKED BY February 28, 2020

Founded in 1972, the National Naval Officers Association (NNOA)is comprised of officers from the Coast Guard, the Navy, and the Marine Corps –the nation’s Sea Services. NNOA provides professional development and mentoring in an effort to recruit, promote, and retain minority officers in the Sea Services. NNOA seeks to strengthen a diverse officer corps to enhance operational readiness in the Sea Services and has a long history of providing a positive image of the Sea Services in minority communities and educational institutions. Each year, the Washington, DC Chapter of the NNOA(DCNNOA) awards scholarships starting at $1,000 to minority youth from the Washington, DC Metropolitan Area based on academic achievement, positive community involvement, commitment, and financial need. Scholarship recipients select their major and attend the college or university of their choice without any obligation to join or affiliate with the military, unless stipulated by the scholarship sponsor. Students must submit a complete application package in order to be considered for a scholarship. 2020 Yom Hashoah Essay Contest

75 Years Later: Or Stories of Survival, Loss, Liberation

Who Is Eligible:  All Howard County middle and high school students.

Purpose of Essay Contest

The Howard County Holocaust Remembrance Committee seeks to remember the Holocaust by learning from the events that took place in Europe from 1933-1945.The essay provides students an opportunity for reflection and to consider how the atrocities of the Holocaust continue to impact us today.  The hope is that this will highlight the importance of standing up against hateful actions to prevent terrible events from happening again in the future.

There will be a first and second place prize awarded at the middle school level and the high school level.  First prize winners will receive $100.  Second prize winners will receive $50.

Essay Background and Topic, as well as basic thing to know are available in Student Services.  Essay should be submitted by email no later than March 15, 2020.
