MARCH 2020 Scholarships

The Local Scholarships you have all been waiting for are all finally ready.  Several of these scholarships are Memorial Scholarships that are for Glenelg High Students ONLY.  Read through the descriptions below. Then, get an application in Student Services to apply today.

Matthew Cheswick Memorial Scholarship Award ($1,000)

(For a Glenelg High School student only)

Matthew Cheswick, a 2008 Glenelg Graduate, was an individual with an infectious smile and a good heart.  He is remembered for his many random acts of kindness and for the good citizen that he was.  This $1,000 scholarship has been established to remember him and his compassion for helping others.  It will be awarded to a student who also has the same characteristics.  An essay explaining your philosophy on the importance of helping others with examples, and how this scholarship would assist you in college/career goals is part of the application process.  Applications are available in Glenelg High Student Services.  Completed applications must be submitted to Ms. Brandt in Student Services by April 1, 2020.

 

Ryan Conley Memorial Scholarship

(For a Glenelg High School student only)

Ryan Conley, a junior at Glenelg High School in 2007, was tragically killed in a sledding accident.  He spent many hours volunteering and assisting those in need.  This $1,000 scholarship is intended to reward an “unsung hero” who works quietly and consistently behind the scenes for the betterment of his/her community.  Applications are available in Student Services.  Completed applications must be submitted to Ms. Brandt by April 1, 2020.   C:\Users\smiles\Desktop\Local Applications\Ryan Conley Scholarship Application.pdf

 

The Howard County Professional Fire Fighters Association, IAFF Local 2000 is pleased to announce they will provide a $500 scholarship for a graduating senior from each of our Howard County public high schools.  This scholarship is geared to help the “average” student who displays exceptional qualities and effort rather than being an award for the highest grades or sports aptitude.  Any student who has attained a 2.5 grade average in their senior year and a minimum SAT score of 900 will be welcome to participate by submitting an application.  Applications are available in Student Services.  Entries must be postmarked no later than April 1, 2020.  Entries shall be submitted to:

Brandon Joseph Reese Memorial Scholarship

(For a Glenelg High School student only)

Brandon Reese, a 2016 Glenelg High School graduate was everyone’s “best friend”.  He was the person who always made people feel good about themselves, understood and celebrated individual’s uniquenesses and was always ready to lend a listening ear.  He was an active member of the Glenelg High wrestling team, school choir and Best Buddies Program.  This scholarship has been established to remember him and his compassion for helping others.  It will be awarded to a student who portrays the same attributes.  Applications are available in Student Services.  Completed applications must be submitted to Mrs. Brandt in Student Services by April 1, 2020. 

 

Olivia Paregol Memorial Scholarship

(For a Glenelg High School student only)

Olivia Paregol was a 2018 graduate of Glenelg High School and well known as the person who naturally connected with the newly transferred students, and those who might have been on the fringes of popularity, or who might have been perceived to be different from other classmates.  This scholarship in her honor creates a very “Olivia way” of selecting scholarship award.   The application involves a recommendation from a Glenelg teacher and an essay.  More details are available in Student Services.  Applications must be submitted to Glenelg High School Student Services by April 2, 2020.

 

Rodney Williams Memorial Scholarship

(For a Glenelg High School student only)

Honoring the loving memory of a dear friend, colleague and school counselor for his 18 years of unparalleled devotion, care, compassion and committed guidance and friendship to all students and staff.  Rodney will be remembered for eternity in the hearts of his students and colleagues because he touched so many lives.  This scholarship aims to recognize a student who exemplifies the spirit and faith of Rodney Williams.  Student must have maintained a 2.5 GPA or higher, had a personal history of volunteerism within the community, and may have experienced the loss of a parent.  A resume, essay, letters of recommendation and unofficial transcript are needed.  Applications are available in Student Services.  Applications are due to Ms. Brandt in Student Services no later than April 1, 2020.

 

PTA Council of Howard County is proud to offer scholarships to Howard County School Seniors for the 2020-2021 school year.

The principle aim of this scholarship program is to offer financial support to Howard County high school senior students and to encourage serious and deserving students to continue their studies in a junior/community college, four year college/university, or a technical trade school after high school graduation. This a one-year non-renewable grant.

Academic Scholarship - $1,000

Teacher Education Scholarship  - $1,000

Dr. Charles Ecker Scholarship for Community Service - $500

M. Thomas Goedeke Scholarship for trade, technical education or Community College - $500

Scholarship awards may be applied toward tuition, fees, books or other costs directly related to educational needs.  The application process is now open and may be obtained in Student Services or at www.ptach.org.  Applications are due by April 14, 2020. 

 

The Howard County Striders' David Tripp Scholar/Athlete Awards Program has been in existence for more than 25 years. The criteria include excellence and achievement in the classroom and in running related athletics. The intention is to recognize both male and female winners as well as runners-up, provided there are deserving candidates. Only Howard County residents, who are graduating seniors from a high school in Howard County are eligible. These awards are based on four years of achievements, and are not based on need. 

In  the past three years, the striders have awarded an average of $6,000 in “Trip” grants.   There are no restrictions on the number of winners that can come from any one school.  Applications and Suggestions and Guidelines are available at www.striders.net  Application deadline is April 3, 2020.

The Glenwood Lions Club is offering educational scholarships to graduating students enrolled at Glenelg High School.  Two $2,000 scholarships will be awarded to Glenelg High School Seniors graduating in 2020.  The scholarships are dedicated for the use of tuition, registration fees, housing and other expenses related to enrollment for the freshmen year at an accredited college, university, technical school, or other approved postsecondary institution.  Criteria: U.S. Citizen, Demonstration of Academic Performance, Demonstration of Community Service, Demonstration of Financial Need, and Demonstration of Participation in School/Community Activities. Applications are available in Student Services.  Completed applications must be returned to Mrs. Miles in Student Services no later than March 31, 2020.   Two winners will be chosen by the Glenwood Lions Club Education Services Committee without regard to race, color, national origin, religion, age, disability, gender, marital status, sexual orientation or family status.

 

Zaching Against Cancer Foundation Spirit Award Scholarship

The Zaching Against Cancer Foundation (ZACF) is proud to present six $2,500 Spirit Award Scholarship to 2020 Graduates of a Maryland High School who have excelled in High School while overcoming personal hardship relating to cancer.  Those who qualify may have experienced hardships such as: being a cancer survivor, a caregiver for some with cancer, or a relative of a person with cancer.  The scholarships are for graduates who will be attending a two or four year college.  More information and applications are available at www.zachingagainstcancer.org   The application deadline is April 1, 2020.

 

Freedom Soccer Club (FSC) is once again proud to support the local community through the Freedom Soccer Club Scholarship Program. Over the last ten years, we have awarded many scholarships to graduating seniors and/or college freshman that have played for FSC. We are excited to continue this tradition and look forward to receiving applications this year from our local students.

The Zonta Club of Howard County will award one $500.00 scholarship to our local 2020 Zonta International Young Women in Public Affairs Award recipient.
The goal of the Zonta International Young Women in Public Affairs (YWPA) Award Program is to encourage young women to participate in public affairs by recognizing a commitment to the volunteer sector, evidence of volunteer leadership achievements and a dedication to empowering women worldwide through service and advocacy. ‘Public affairs’ refers to all aspects of community life where decisions have to be made about issues which relate to and affect those communities in which people work and live.

Women, aged 16-19 on 1st April each year, living in a Zonta
district/region, or who are citizens of a Zonta country, who demonstrate evidence of the following, are eligible to apply.   

Active commitment to volunteerism
Experience in local government, student government, or workplace leadership (paid or unpaid)
Volunteer leadership achievements
Knowledge of Zonta International and its programs
Support for Zonta International's mission of empowering women worldwide through service and advocacy

District/Region recipients receive US $1,500. Ten international recipients are selected from the district/region recipients to receive additional awards of US$4,000 each. District/Region and international awards are funded by the Zonta International Foundation.  

 

Applications are available in Student Services and due by March 20, 2020.

 

COLUMBIA FOUNDATION OF HOWARD COUNTY SCHOLARSHIPS

We are accepting applications for students in the 2020-21 scholarship cycle through March 19, 2020.

Eligibility criteria may be based on where a student went to high school, what a student’s planned major field of study will be or a variety of other factors. While some scholarships are awarded based on the selection of particular guidance departments, others are awarded based on a competitive application process.

The scholarship deadline for the 2020 Community Foundation of Howard County Scholarship Program is March 19, 2020, at 11:59 PM Pacific Time. Please be sure to sign up for our Scholarship eNewsletter for future information about our program.

How do I apply for a scholarship?

To start a new application, follow the instructions below:

Go to https://aim.applyISTS.net/CFHoCo
Login to your existing ISTS Account or create a new account by clicking the “Don’t have an account? Register!” link. Be sure to use an email address that you check regularly; do not use a school email address as these expire after graduation
Once you have successfully logged in, you will be redirected to the Scholarship Eligibility Page. If you are directed to your ISTS Home Page instead of the application, click the Add New Application button, enter the program key CFHoCo, and click apply. 
Complete all required fields, upload your required documents, request all required supplements and click the “Submit” button to save your information. 
Return to your ISTS Home Page at https://aim.applyISTS.com to monitor your application status.  Your application status must update to Complete to be considered for the scholarship program.

Do I need to provide my high school with a copy of the HCPSS Student Transcript Request form after I’ve uploaded it to the application portal?

For the purposes of completing the application you only need to upload this form to the application system. However, if you need a copy of your transcript and/or report card you will need to submit the HCPSS Student Transcript Request form to your school.  As it relates to the scholarship application, you would only need one printed copy of the documents, which you’ll scan and upload to the system when asked to provide these materials.

 

Vision Financial Group Scholarship – Up to $20,000

FOR GLENELG HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR ONLY!!!!!!!

Vision Financial Group, based in Columbia, Maryland, was founded by three long time Howard County residents and graduates of Glenelg High School. Two  brothers and a lifelong friend had a goal of creating a wealth advisory firm that  was focused on building long‐term relationships within their community.  The  founding members remain extremely involved in the local community and this  scholarship is a way for them to give back to the Howard County community.  For more information, review the guidelines. The Amanda Post “AmandaWins” Soccer Association of Columbia/Howard County Student-Athlete Scholarship – $5,000

For high school seniors attending a Howard County public or private school that have played on a SAC/HC travel or recreational team

This scholarship is offered in loving memory of Amanda Josephine Post, who passed away in 2009 during her freshman year at River Hill High School and in her ninth year as a Soccer Association of Columbia/Howard County player. Candidates must plan to attend an accredited two- or four-year college/university or trade school.

John C. Clegg Scholarship – Up to $6,000

For Columbia Clippers swim team participants

For high school seniors who participated on the Columbia Clippers swim team from 9th through 12th grade.

Jon Grove Memorial Scholarship – $2,500

For high school seniors who attend a Howard County public school

This $2,500 scholarship is available to a Howard County Public High School student, currently in their senior year, whose life has been impacted by cancer, either personally or within their immediate family.

Allan Homes Outstanding Student Volunteer Scholarship – Up to $1,500

For individuals who volunteered for the Special Olympics Howard County Swim Team

There is up to $1,500 available to individuals, enrolled in a Maryland high school or college undergraduate program, that demonstrate they volunteered their talent and provided exceptional service to the Special Olympics Howard County Swim Team.

Freeman K. Hill Teen Scholarship – $1,500

For high school seniors who attend a Howard County public or private school

This scholarship is for a Howard County student who demonstrates his or her religious faith through good citizenship, service to others and the community and academic achievement – values that were exemplified in the life of Freeman K. Hill, an engineer at the Applied Physics Lab. Applicants must plan to attend a two- or four-year college/university or trade school.

Robert J. Gaw Memorial Scholarship – $1,000

For high school seniors who attend a Howard County public school

This scholarship is offered in memory of Robert J. Gaw, co-founder of the Ryland Group, Inc. It provides toward the cost of tuition to a two- or four-year college/university or trade school for a Howard County public high school student.

Bob Kittleman Scholarship – Up to $1,000

For high school seniors attending a Howard County public or private school

This scholarship is offered, in honor of Bob Kittleman, for high school seniors who have shown potential in or are accomplished in engineering and the applied sciences. Applicants must plan to attend a two- or four-year college/university or trade school.

Wilbon H. and Mary J. Pulliam Scholarship – $1,000

For high school seniors attending a Howard County public or private school

This scholarship is offered in memory of Wilbon H. and Mary J. Pulliam for Howard County high school seniors planning to attend a two- or four-year college/university or trade school in Maryland.

C. Merritt Pumphrey Scholarship – $1,000

For high school seniors attending a Howard County Public school or Chapelgate

This scholarship is offered in memory of C. Merritt Pumphrey, who died at the age of 83 on December 7, 2007. Candidates must plan to attend a four-year college or university to pursue an education in pre-law, agriculture, animal husbandry,or a field related to farming. Mr. Pumphrey worked with his father and brother to create Dalton Farms, a dairy farm that is now Thunder Hill of Columbia.

Dorothy Iglehart Pumphrey Memorial Scholarship – $1,000

For high school seniors attending a Howard County Public school or Chapelgate

This scholarship is available to a student currently in their senior year at a Howard County Public School or Chapelgate, which plans to pursue a career in the fine arts or who has been involved in the fine arts in the school or community.

Karen and Howard Carolan Scholarship – $1,000

For high school seniors who have participated in the Howard County Youth Program

This scholarship is offered in loving memory of Howard T. Carolan, Jr., and Karen R. Carolan, longtime residents of Howard County. Applicants must have participated in the Howard County Youth Program and must plan to attend a two- or four-year college/university or trade school.
