FAQ for College Apps!
Below are some frequently asked questions we have been receiving from students. We thought it would be helpful to send to all seniors.
1. What if I don’t know all of the colleges I’m applying to by October 2nd?
October 2nd is the deadline to submit transcript request forms and letters of recommendations (for teachers) for the November 1 deadline. This means that if you want your letter and transcript sent by a November 1 deadline, you MUST submit the blue transcript request form and the yellow teacher form by October 2nd. If you do not have a final list of colleges, don’t panic! Submit the blue form with the schools you are sure that you are applying to. Then you can submit an additional form at any point or delete one of the colleges. The important piece is getting the initial form in by October 2nd!
2. My common app account won’t match with Naviance. What do I do?
The problem lies with Common App. Students need to go to their common app account, then to their My colleges tab. Pick one college (it doesn’t matter which one) and complete ALL of the questions within that tab as well as the FERPA form. Once you complete these questions and the FERPA form, go back to Naviance, and then to Colleges I’m Applying to and Match your common app.
3. What is my counselor’s title and phone number?
School Counselor and our phone number is 410-313-5535 and our fax number is 410-313-8538.
4. When will I find out class rank?
Class rank will be calculated on October 1. Once it is calculated and made official, the rank becomes live in Naviance under your About Me tab. We will send an email to students indicating the rank is live AND sharing the class size. The class size will not be accurate in Naviance so use the class size 280!
5. Do I have to match coalition to Naviance?
No, but you do have to let us know that you are using coalition application to apply to schools.
6. What steps do I need to follow to request a teacher recommendation?
Students must ask the teacher, request them on Naviance (under College’s I’m Applying to, Letters of Recommendation), and then give the teacher the yellow teacher recommendation form.
7. I have ARL and can’t find my teacher on the drop down menu! What do I do?
ARL teachers have access to all students in the county so just submit the yellow form to them. You do not need to request ARL teachers on Naviance!
8. Where do I get a blue transcript request form and the yellow teacher recommendation forms?
All forms can be found in Student Services directly next to the registrar’s office.

HCC’s financial aid office is very excited about the upcoming FAFSA workshop that will be held at Glenelg High School from 8:00 am to 2:30 pm on Wednesday, October 2, 2019. The financial aid officers hope that coming onsite to Glenelg High School will be helpful for students and families to encourage early completion of the FAFSA and maximize the opportunity for students to apply early enough for financial aid to be considered not only for federal aid but, for state and institutional aid as well.
Please note, this workshop is not just for those planning to attend Howard Community College. It is for all students preparing to enroll for any college during the 2020-2021 academic year.
Call Mrs. Miles in Student Services for an appointment. 410-313-5535
A maximum of 40 appointments may be scheduled.
Spanish speaking interpreters will be available, if needed.
Parents/Students are encouraged to bring the following information with them:
a. The student and the parents Federal Student Aid ID, if they already have one.
b. A copy of the student and/or the parents 2018 Tax Returns, if they have filed.
c. A copy of the student and/or the parents 2018 W2s and,
d. All 2018 untaxed income info. Untaxed information includes but is not limited to child support, housing, food, and other living allowances, veterans non-educational benefits, etc.
Computers will be up and running for families to log on and receive assistance from Financial Aid Advisors with the completion the FAFSA. While we recommend that both the student and a parent attend, we understand that parents and sometimes students are unavailable during the day. If only one can attend, we will walk through the process with the attendee to ensure they can take the information back and complete the application process later, when they get home.

What is the Downtown Columbia Maker Faire? Maker Faire is the Greatest Show (and Tell) on Earth—a family-friendly festival of invention, creativity and resourcefulness, and a celebration of the Maker movement. Part science fair, part county fair, and part something entirely new, Maker Faire is an all-ages gathering of tech enthusiasts, crafters, educators, tinkerers, hobbyists, engineers, science clubs, authors, artists, students, and commercial exhibitors. All of these “makers” come to Maker Faire to show what they have made and to share what they have learned. https://downtowncolumbia.makerfaire.com/about/
