Howard Community College Admission Advisor, Catrina Slater, will be in Student Services for “Apply Sessions” on

All students who have any interest in attending Howard Community College in the Fall are encouraged to come to one of these sessions. You will be assisted in completing your application online in Student Services and being registered on the spot. Sign up to come with Mrs. Miles in Student Services, your counselor or on your Naviance account.
Staff Sgt. Martinez, from the U.S. Marines will be in Student Services on Monday February 24, 2020 at 10:00 am to speak to any students interested in finding out more about the Marines. Sign up on Naviance or with Ms. Miles in Student Services if you are interested in meeting with him.
Leadership opportunity for Grade 10 students.
Leadership U is a four-month leadership development and community service program available to current sophomores who either live or attend school in Howard County. There is a cost associated to participate in this program. Students selected to be part of the program may receive financial support to attend. Applications are now available and are due on March 12, 2020. The program begins the summer prior to the students junior year of high school. Students entering the program must attend the week of August 2 – August 7.

Late January 2020 General and Local Scholarship Updates
The Champions Against Cancer Foundation established the John L. Champion Memorial Scholarship to support the financial needs of graduating high school seniors whose lives have been affected by cancer. The award seeks to honor the spirit, positivity, sharp mind and determination that John displayed during his life and through his battle with cancer. Scholarship amounts will be between $250 and $1,000 each.
Applicants must be a graduating senior currently attending one of Howard County, Maryland’s 12 public high schools. Applicants must have a parent/guardian who had or has cancer or lost a parent/guardian to cancer. Applicant will attend a higher education/vocational institution in the fall of 2020. Applications are available at www.champsagainstcancer.com
Applications are due no later than March 31, 2020.
WJZ’s 2018 Black History Oratory Competition
WJZ’s Black History Oratory Competition will begin on January 1, 2018 at 12:01am and end on January 31, 2018 at 12:01am. Competition is sponsored by Enoch Pratt Free Library, Morgan State University, Toyota Financial Services, Reginald F. Lewis Museum, and WJZ.
WJZ’s Black History Oratory Competition is open to students in grades 9-12 residing in Maryland. Minors must have the approval of parent or legal guardian.
To participate in the competition, entrant will choose from one of three motivational quotes from Oprah Winfrey, Audre Lorde and Booker T. Washington and express in an original essay of 600 words or less, typed and double spaced, what it means to them. Entrant must fill out an application form available at WJZ, 3725 Malden Avenue, Baltimore, Md. 21211; or at http://www.wjz.com and email it along with the essay to Oratory@wjz.com or mail it along with the essay to:

The Maryland Higher Education Commission is happy to announce that the 2020-2021 Veterans of Afghanistan and Iraq Conflicts (VAIC) Scholarship Program application is now available!
To apply, you will need to create an account within the Maryland College Aid Processing System (MDCAPS). To create or log into your existing MDCAPS account (if applicable), please visit https://mdcaps.mhec.state.md.us/MDCAPS/login.aspx. Once you log into your MDCAPS account, you will see the "Apply" link where you may submit your application and view any additional documentation required for consideration of the scholarship.
Please note that the VAIC application, the 2020-2021 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), and all additional documents required must be submitted to the Office of Student Financial Assistance at the Maryland Higher Education Commission no later than March 1, 2020.

4 County Lions Club Scholarship
Winners will be chosen based on GPA, financial need, recommendation, attitude, demonstrate school and community involvement. A personal statement is part of the application. Applications and more details are available in Student Services. The application deadline is March 31, 2020.
Miss Utility/District One Call is pleased to announce its sixth annual college scholarship program for graduating high school seniors. Please consider sharing this opportunity with students and including it in your scholarship listings and/or newsletters. Miss Utility/District One Call will select one student from each of the eight regions outlined in the application covering Maryland and Washington, D.C., to receive a $1,008.11 single-year scholarship. Applications will be accepted until April 3, 2020.

The Miss Utility/District One Call Scholarship requires applicants to submit the following:

To be eligible, applicants must be on track to graduate from a Maryland or Washington, D.C., high school in spring 2020 and intend to enroll in an accredited two-year or four-year college, university or technical school beginning in fall 2020. Scholarship recipients will be notified in May 2020.

The Howard County Foundation For Black Educational and Cultural Achievement invites African-American students who will be graduating in the Spring of 2020 to apply for their scholarship. The principal requirements are residency in Howard County, a GPA of 2.5 or better, two recommendations, and a 250-300 word essay. The applicant has multiple topics to choose from for the essay.
